Career Snaps
Copywriter
We caught up with Tiarni Blair. Copywriter, Geelong.
What's a copywriter?
In a nutshell, a copywriter is a writer of copy and helps create a range of content from taglines and advertisements to web page content and other marketing communications.
Why copywriting?
I've always loved writing and reading – I guess the two kind of go hand in hand. At school I was never interested in maths or numbers, but excelled at English studies. So, a role that's focussed around words and ideas has always been very important.
What was your first job?
After completing a double degree at uni, I landed my first job in the marketing/corporate team at Geelong Cats. My role was so diverse and every single hour was completely different. I gained great experience through managing events, involvement in community programs, corporate packages and sponsorships, developing promotional materials including copy and even managing Half Cat (the mascot) appearances!
Describe a typical day
In my current role at Target, a typical day includes writing content for our website, including articles, developing email messages, blurbs, taglines and other online communications. I also edit and proofread copy. Clear and consistent communication is key, but it's also very important that copy has the right 'flavour'.
Favourite career highlight?
I spent over a year working in London for ARUP, a major global engineering firm, although I don't think I fully appreciated this experience until I arrived back home. It was a real eye-opener. Looking back now, I got to work on some great projects including ARUP's marketing and communication plan for the World Architecture Festival, plus much more.
What are some of the challenges?
I think writing is one of those things that everyone thinks they can do, so there's always plenty of 'opinions' to deal with. It's not as simple as just tapping at a keyboard or scribbling on paper, I really need to have a clear understanding of the task and be in the right frame of mind to write well, which sometimes can be a struggle.
What skills do you need for the job?
Obviously writing, editing and great communication skills are a must. Attention to detail is really important, along with the ability to be very flexible
Any advice
If you're interested in a career in writing - read, listen and look. Whether it be magazines, catalogues, website, blogs, billboards, advertisements or even the telly, you can learn so much.
What's next?
I have no idea. At the moment, I'm just enjoying what I'm doing, so we'll just wait and see!
